A Solar Observatory at Sun–Earth L1

Design the mission from destination to propellant budget — and check every step against Aditya-L1.

Your agency wants a solar observatory with an unbroken view of the Sun and an hour’s warning of the solar wind. In this assignment you make the design decisions in the order a mission team makes them: characterise Sun–Earth L1, size a halo orbit against a ground-station requirement, decide whether its stable manifold can deliver the spacecraft for free or a direct transfer is needed, and close the Δv and propellant budget with margin. At every step your numbers can be compared with ISRO’s Aditya-L1, which flew this mission in 2023–24.

Your observatory will watch the Sun from Sun–Earth L1. Before designing anything, characterise the destination. • Write l1_summary(mu, L, T): the distance of L1 from the Earth, C at L1, and the e-folding time of the linearised motion (largest real eigenvalue). • Compare with the sphere of influence a(m/M)^(2/5): which model — patched conic or three-body — must you use?
