How signals are measured, filtered, sampled and sent, and the systems that shape them — from the impulse response to GPS
The two languages engineers use for signals: time, through impulse responses and convolution, and frequency, through Fourier, Laplace and z. Fourier series and transforms, sampling and reconstruction, the DFT and the FFT, analog and digital filters, feedback, modulation, and signals found again under the noise by correlation. Each unit opens with a real instrument, discovery or failure where the mathematics mattered, and every lesson ends with Python labs in SciPy, SymPy, python-control, PyWavelets and pandas.
From al-Kindī counting letters in Baghdad, the ratios of al-Fārābī and Ṣafī al-Dīn and the Banū Mūsā’s instrument that plays itself, to Fourier’s heat, Kelvin’s tide machine, sampling and the FFT: a thousand years of turning waves into numbers. Read this before Lesson 1-1.
